About Mary Box Carlsson

I have a stack of incomprehensible books on my nightstand about cosmology and time and atomic activity that I pluck at about once a week. I’m trying to understand the holy crack of the Big Bang, what happened before before.

It charms me that we are made from elements soldered in the bellies of stars, that we are bloody bits of the universe exploring itself. I’d like to find evidence that we are all molecularly driven to create, a genetic gift from our glowing parents.

I originally called this work, “Singularity,” referring to the stasis of collapsed matter preceding the Big Bang, when nothing is about to bust into a roomful of something.

But after a few paintings, I realized that I was more interested in the launch out of stasis, the escape from the pack, the derivative at the zero hour.

So I widened the title.

“All of a Sudden” is about that first daring step out of the black and into the light and vice versa. It happens with a reason and it happens without. It is potentially lonely, probably risky, and sometimes followed by an explosion of unpredictable consequences.
