About Catherine Blair

Painting is a very expressive experience for me. Beauty inspires me, and my goal is share the passion I have for art with others. I use a direct approach to painting, which means that, whenever possible, I like to paint from life. I find painting from life to be exciting, dynamic, and challenging! When I was in college I remember being deeply moved by the great masters such as Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Goya, Rodin, and then later Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Modigliani and Picasso. My work during this time was influenced greatly by these masters. I produced works on paper that combined water-based paint with pastel, charcoal, and pen and ink to create figurative pieces with an ethereal quality. Subject matter included landscapes, figurative, still life, animals and portraiture. In September 2001, during the MFA program at the Academy of Art University I began working more in oils. Using the palette of the impressionists and studying their techniques, I began painting on location in Carmel with landscape artist Brian Blood for my final thesis project. I received my MFA in painting in December 2005, and currently teach classes privately and exhibit my work in galleries throughout the bay area and Carmel.
