I make intricately detailed drawings and paintings. Displayed here is a detail from a 9”x9” sumi ink drawing. I often draw much smaller and must use multiple layers of reading glasses to help me see what I am doing on the close-up work.
The two miniature gouache images (both details) show how the painted world opens up when viewed through magnification. Some of the painted lines were created with a single brush hair. Magnifying glasses are provided in my studio to help with the viewing of the miniatures. My large acrylic and oil canvases are easy to see with the naked eye, though close observation reveals hidden imagery.
My philosophy is that the world is interesting viewed from a distance as well as very close up. There is always something to be learned from wherever one positions oneself, the number of lessons increased by the number of perspectives taken.
