I paint interpretive expressions of landscape and florals in oil. I start with the close connection I feel when I am observing subjects in nature, such as the sea, California hills or flowers. I use nature as my point of departure to explore the incredible color, texture and transparency range of oil to create an emotional impression of the scene or object.
Since childhood I have enjoyed hiking, running, biking, camping and backpacking in the open country. I also enjoy gardening, including growing flowers as potential subjects. Painting landscape and still life is a way to connect with nature and capture that feeling for myself and others to enjoy.
I resist formula and simply try to express the essence of what I see and feel. I often make sketches and small paintings on location and use them to inform my studio pieces.
