About Annie Haines

I have been painting for many decades because I realized long ago that art is something I must do even during the most difficult or busy times. Over the past several years I have been concentrating on painting landscapes in and around the Bay Area. I find that when I get outside and spend time deeply looking, which is a requirement for good painting, the landscape becomes a part of who I am and this brings me peace. Watercolor is my medium of choice, although I do sometimes use other media. I love the sense of light and transparency inherent in watercolor and how it can still look wet and flowing even after it is dry. I try to work with these qualities to help depict my emotional response to a place. My paintings often contain geometric or architectural elements, but this is always tempered by nature’s random and tenacious energy. People like the color, textures and atmosphere of my work and often comment that my paintings make an ordinary scene look beautiful, interesting or moody.

My work has been exhibited nationally and abroad and is held in private collections in many areas of the world. I hold an Associates Degree in Commercial Illustration from Lansing Community College in Michigan. Working for fourteen years as the librarian in the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan also had a lasting influence on my art.
