About Daniel McClain

The simple graphic quality and inherent physical presence of books have always fascinated me: the tactile object, its weight, and its feel. With this series of work, I simplified the forms of the book covers, exposed spines, stitching, and end papers that I have been working with recently. The painted images of familiar everyday objects open up a question about what a book is and represents, while the words and text that are the function of a book are removed. The recognizable imagery creates a dialog between the viewer and the object being viewed, opening up a discussion that I hope reveals something about the viewer and their time and space at a particular moment. This series of work combines surprising surfaces or scraps of paper with the use of disassembled books. The emotional pieces feature distinctive imagery of familiar objects that gives the work a random, arresting quality.

Daniel McClain was born in San Francisco, a graduate from the California College of the Arts, he works at his Berkeley, California, studio. His work can be viewed at KALA Art Institute Gallery, and SFMOMA Artists Gallery. Daniel McClain has exhibited at KALA Art Institute Gallery, SFMOMA Artists Gallery, Barbara Anderson Gallery, Berkeley Art Center, The Transmission Gallery, and numerous northern California galleries.
